MARGARET ANN (NEWLIN) YOUNG-RENIHAN

MARGARET ANN (NEWLIN) YOUNG-RENIHAN

With her family nearby, Margaret went home to the warm embrace of the Lord at 8:13 A.M. MST/PDT on May 18th, 2015:

She was a loving daughter, sister, and wife, mother, grandmother (and great grandmother): born December 15, 1924 in Milwaukee, WI to Ann (Wiles) and Henry Newlin. She was raised in NJ & PA until her family relocated to southern California in 1939. Meeting the love of her life, Frederick Young, during new student orientation at Glendale High School; they were part of the Class of 1942, and were married in December of 1943. After the War, they settled in Van Nuys where they started their family and following their passion for dogs. First showing Boxers, then Bedlingtons and other terriers. Margaret & Fred became well known among the West Coast dog show personalities.

Margaret was mother to a son (Phillip Arthur), and two daughters (Christine Marie and Laura Jean). She was homemaker, dog breeder & exhibitor, kennel owner, medical office manager, and American Kennel Club dog show judge. She operated Fremar Kennel in both Burbank and Malibu, and “came into her own” as an AKC show judge starting in the late 1960’s: she was in much demand as a multiple-group judge throughout the country during the 1970’s and 80’s. She actively continued this pursuit after the death of Fred in 1987. She later married Richard Renihan of Davenport, IA, another AKC show judge, and they continued to judge and travel worldwide. Her dog show accomplishments include the creation of the Great Western Terriers Association and the development of the Beverly Hills Kennel Club: they became one of the elite “must attend” dog shows of the west coast in the 70’s, 80’s & 90’s.

In 2003 she moved from her beloved Burbank home on Andover Drive, to Gilbert, AZ in order to be closer to Christine and her great grandchildren. The move marked her semi-retirement from dog show judging to a leisurely life of family matriarch.

Her loving children survive her: Phillip Young (Santa Fe, NM), Christine Erickson (Mesa, AZ) and Laura Young (Gilbert, AZ). She is also survived by: her sister Virginia Bowens (Ventura, CA), her brother Bruce Newlin (Rancho Mirage, CA), Grandsons Evan Erickson (Gilbert, AZ) and Justin Young (Albuquerque, NM), and great grandchildren William, Emily, and Andrew Erickson of Gilbert, AZ.

A “celebration of life” will be planned to take place at her home in Gilbert; this be followed sometime later this summer by a memorial and interment service at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park- Hollywood Hills.   Rest-in-Peace Mom. You made us ALL better people while with us. Life will never be the same, but we give you thanks and feel contentment that you are now with-the-ages…

NOTE: the Celebration of Life was held at her home in Gilbert, AZ on the 10th of June; it was complete with a surprise visit by her 87-year old sister (Virginia) from Ventura, Calif. Her Memorial & Interment service is scheduled for Forest Lawn - Hollywood Hills on the 22nd of July, 2015 (at 9 A.M.).
