I was going to talk about water, really. Just not this way. After all H2O was sacred to the ancient Nabataeans, and they did their all to capture, channel, store and conserve this precious life-way. It is evident in their engineering, water-works, and special places.
Earlier this morning, between 4and 4:30 (a half-hour before the call for morning prayers), a heavy thunderstorm hit Wadi Musa and Petra. We haven’t how much was too much, but t was too much. A segment of the Roman era cobble road in the Siq was washed away. Erosion of the road traveling into The Basin was in places two feet; mud was covered the floors of some guest shops; the buried sewage vault of the newest restrooms (only months old) was washed out. It was a day of major inconvenience for the people and visitors of Petra. Still they came… still they persevered… as has been the case stretching along this road since before Rome was the dream of a couple-of-brothers.
I heard building rage today against “The Government,” especially after they drove past damaged areas that are closed to entry on horse or donkey. Some things are universal. Hopefully, tomorrow will be a better day (inshallah). But, it rained again tonight…
